One of the taglines for this movie was "GO BIG OR GO EXTINCT" and thankfully Pacific Rim did not go extinct so much so that Guillermo Del Toro has gotten the greenlight to bring us a sequel to his massive movie!
The original Pacific Rim (2013) was made on a production budget of approxiamately $190 million, has a U.S. domestic gross of $101,802,906 and a worldwide gross of $309 million bringing in a total of $411,002,906. That said, the most impressive thing about this news is that even though, as with all of Hollywood movies, it was deemed as a failure in the U.S. box office having brought in $100 million and barely scraping its $190 million budget, meaning that it failed to bring in the other $90 million and that would mean due to poor performance in the U.S. the movie, regardless of it's international takings would be seen as a flop. So getting a sequel might be read as, we the global community are finally being taken note of as well.... FINALLY ... and movies we support may now carry weight when decisions are made by the various studios regarding whether a movie is successful or not.
The movie is also going to be co-written together with Del Toro by genius storyteller Zak Penn. Penn has added his brilliant writing talents behind prolific movies such as Marvel's The Avengers, The Incredible Hulk (2008), X-Men 2 (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). With Penn involved, you almost certainly know this movie will be in the best of hands!
And in case you forgot about Pacific Rim, here's the trailer for the original movie
