REVIEW
Finally a horror with depth, a well written story and tons of psychological tension and drama. This one is definitely not for the faint hearted!

The story revolves around the life of Frank ( Elijah Wood ), a mannequin shop owner who to satisfy his psychological urges is also a serial killer with a difference, he takes the scalps of his victims. His life changes suddenly with the entrance of a photographer and artist ( Nora Arnezeder ) into his life.

The movie touches on his shocking family history with his mother, not at all different from Norman Bates, and how it twisted and moulded him into what he now is, making us both empathy and fear towards Frank. The character structure as well as the story have you glued to the screen as you watch and learn more about Frank's mental state.

The directing and camera work make you feel as though you are Frank as most of the movie is actually shot from his perspective and only now and again we catch glimpses of Frank as he passes mirrors or gazes into his reflection.

Maniac is a horror worth watching as it sets itself apart from so much of the senseless movies out there today and with a shining performance by Elijah Wood, this movie shouldn't be missed. Bear in mind that it's not for the squeamish as there are ample scenes showing scalping in graphic detail.
