How do I start this, perhaps the question should be where do I start this? Alright, this movie covers so many different issues but still maintains itself as a Robert Rodriguez high octane actioner!
The fact that this movie originated from a short trailer shown in another Robert Rodriguez movie and now has become it's own full length movie is enough to respect this filmmaker.
The movie in typical Troublemakers Studio fashion starts off as though filmed with aged stock and develops intself into a cleverly intwined story encompassing many evils surrounding politics, Mexican immigrants and even bad parenting ( funny scenes with Jeff Fahey and Lindsay Lohan, as father and daughter ).
While watching this, I pondered the racist overtones throughout the movie and whilst I'm reminded of Rodriguez's own ethnicity, I have to ask myself if a different director was involved would the movie then be more racist. With people being referred to as "wetbacks" and so forth, one wonders how far these mral lines can be pushed, even in a movie whose sole purpose is to produce enough action to satisfy any moviegoers violent urges.
The corrupt, racist senator, played by Robert De Niro, is another interesting look into the American libeal mindset, add this to a American Immigration officer who herself is of Mexican heritage ( played by Jessica Alba ) and an underground rebel leader who is fashioned after Che himself with a name like She ( played by Michelle Rodriguez ), and one has to wonder what underlying even subliminal message Rob Rod is sending through to the audience.
That said though, be prepared for an awesome actioned pack roller coaster ride through the mind of an action genius such as Robert Rodriguez. The movie in my opinion is a by the book Rodriguez action fest. Whatever formulae he's used across all his movies has clearly culminated into this action beauty.
I dare any action fan to try and stay away from this one. There are many memorable scenes throughout the movie and with added bonuses of seeing Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan and even Don Johnson in leading roles, it would be a cinematic sacrilege not to fork out some cash and have a look at this one.
Look out for the other iconic characters in the movie like the nurses and doctor who attend to Machete's wounds and return again in the end as though the entire Mexican nation has to be saved. The ending is fitting to the overall mood of revenge as seen throughout the movie.
So if you're in the mood for a good action piece, mark my words, Robert Rodriguez delivers more than his fair share and you almost wish he could make plenty more of these type of movies as only he can. Well done guys, I'm definitely a fan.
