We are in an age of remakes and these days nothing seems sacred. So far we've had Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall remade, Fright Night, Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre...the list is ongoing.
The problem with some remakes is that they can't capture the very essence of what made some of these movies successful and as with the case of Robocop, the cult status.
The debate has always and will always be, should we be remaking classic movies and weren't they good enough to be left as is?
So we'll have to accept that remakes are now etched into the minds of Hollywood execs and should be instant money makers because these movies already have a fan base.
Who could forget the original Robocop? The way in which director Verhoeven set out his futuristic world and the very humanity of a man turned against his will into a machine. was spectacularly executed raising this from what could've been a B movie into a science fiction classic.
The new Robocop will feature new actors, a redesigned suit and as Hollywood things go, -probably a new storyline. The movie is so far set for a 2014 release and is currently filming and in production.
Actors attached to the project include Samuel L. Jackson, Jackie Earle Haley, Gary Oldman, Jay Baruchel and Michael Keaton with the Alex Murphy A.K.A Robocop Character to be played by Joel Kinnaman ( of The Killing TV Series fame ). The movie has attached Jose Pidilha ( Elite Squad & Bus 174 ) as director.
So all of us die hard Robocop fan will wait in anticipation as this movie nears completion so that we can see if any justice and respect will be granted to the original. Not totally impossible as we've seen J.J. Abrams re-evolve the Star Trek movies and actually invigorate new life and fans into that "universe". Perhaps this too will create a whole new following and be better than any of us ever could imagine...... only time will tell.
For nostalgia sake and a reminder, here's the original Robocop as portayed and brought to life by actor Peter Weller back in 1987.
