In 2008 the world saw the release of Iron Man courtesy of Marvel Studios and director Jon Favreau. It also resulted in actor Robert Downey Jr. donning both the role and suit perfectly and portraying playboy billionaire Tony Stark as though the character were tailor-made for him. The role of a lifetime and one which rejuvenated Downey Jr.'s career.
Once again in 2010, Tony Stark returned to our screens in Iron Man 2 with Jon Favreau serving once again as director and this time we were introduced to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Samuel L. Jackson starring as Nick Fury and Scarlett Johannsen as the Black Widow. Terence Howard who starred as Rhodey in the first movie made way for the part to be played by Don Cheadle. The main villain was Mickey Rourke.
So after a very successful part in Marvel's The Avengers in 2012, we got to see Tony Stark once again in Iron Man 3. This time the changes include no S.H.I.E.L.D. agents or Nick Fury and Shane Black replaced Jon Favreau as director. The twist regarding The Mandirin caused a huge uproar amongst fanboys but movie going audiences didn't seem to mind with the movie being regarded as a box office success, yet again.
There have been rumours that this has been Downey Jr.'s last time playing Iron Man in his own movie but since then it has been reported by various sources that his contract has him down to play the part two more times but possibly as part of a different movie like The Avengers sequel. Well the question now remains whether or not anyone else could fill the shoes of Tony Stark and what will happen to the character once Downey Jr. is replaced? With the amount of money the Iron Man Movies have made, it wouldn't make financial success to leave the character by the wayside and we all know that studios are all about cold hard cash.
