  The vampire brothers Damon and Stefan Salvatore, eternal adolescents, having been leading 'normal' lives, hiding their bloodthirsty condition, for centuries, moving on before their non-aging is noticed. They are back in the Virginia town where they became vampires. Stefan is noble, denying himself blood to avoid killing, and tries to control his evil brother Damon. Stefan falls in love with schoolgirl Elena, whose best friend is a witch, like her grandma.   Zach Roerig, Michael Trevino and Paul Wesley originally auditioned to play Damon before landing their respective roles.   

Nina Dobrev is six months younger than Steven R. McQueen while her character is two years older than his character.

   

Alexandra Chando auditioned four times for the role of Elena Gilbert.

  

Torrey DeVitto (Meredith Fell) previously auditioned for the role of Elena Gilbert.

 

 

  

Claire Holt (Rebekah) and Phoebe Tonkin (Hayley) previously worked together on another fantasy series, H2O: Just Add Water (2006).

  

Claire Holt (Rebekah) was cast by Kevin Williamson after she had auditioned for a role in his other series The Secret Circle (2011).

  

Stephen Amell (Brady) previously auditioned for the roles of Mason Lockwood and Elijah.

  

The pilot was shot in Vancouver but production of the series was moved to Georgia because of the states tax credit incentives. Most of the filming takes place in Covington.

Phoebe Tonkin's first series appearing for the CW Network. Her second series for the CW was The Secret Circle (2011), also a supernatural teen drama, which immediately followed the The Vampire Diaries (2009) in the schedule line-up.

  

According to series producer/director Marcos Siega, The CW Television Network originally wanted to cast Ashlee Simpson in the role of Elena Gilbert.
