REVIEW: OCULUS ... A Better Horror Than You'd Think!

Thursday, June 12, 2014

In terms of horror, we don't have many that are considered just good. Great horror in cinema are usually long and far between in their release and the majority of movies go straight to DVD. Oculus however is not great ala The Exorcist but still good and highly comparable to horrors that are released lately.

I found the story very interesting and it centers around a 'haunted' mirror. It uses some elements from other horrors and at certain times my mind drifted to The Amityville Horror, Paranormal Activity and a host of other horrors. The movie does succeed in delivering the scares and you find yourself on a horror and psychological ride and if you blink longer than a second, you could get lost in the plot.

They have created a clever way of filling the ambience with fear and dread as you get dragged down into a rather simple story of a brother and sister and a mirror that seems to twist and darken the hearts and souls of anybody that challenges it or comes into contact with.

The most prominent of the cast is Katee Sackhoff who has a major as a mother who slowly loses her mind and we the audience watch how she slowly sinks into seemingly insanity as the mirror pours it's evil into her. The movie runs for an hour and 45 minutes and with a production budget of $5 million it managed to make a worldwide total of around $29 million making it a successful exploit. Oculus is definitely worth watching and thus far for 2014 is possibly one of the better horrors this year has had to offer. If you like your frights then this once is for you.
