PARANORMAL ACTIVITY vs THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

The first movie of its kind to be shot documentary style as we journey with three college students going into the woods searching for a witch who allegedly had something to do with the strange disappearance of people in and around the town of Burkittsville.

The movie brought horror to a new chilling level and relied heavily on the premise that the story was true. The film makers were inventive and used extensive viral campaigning as well as creating a televised documentary to add some belief and realism to the movie.

Many people went into this movie believing it was truly based on actual events and this assisted in adding terror to the movie itself. Written and directed by Daniel Myrick & Eduardo Sánchez, the movie proved to be a hit with cinemagoers to the tune of worldwide grosses of a staggering $248 million!

As the original archetype for this kind of movie, it will remain in the archives of history as being the forerunner of movies which followed in the years to come, movies like Quarantine and Cloverfield.

MOVIE BUDGET
$600 000

MOVIE GROSSES
Total US Gross          $140,539,099

International Gross   $107,760,901
Worldwide Gross      $248,300,000

Paranormal Activity (2009)

Utilising almost the same techniques as The Blair Witch Project and just about 10 years later, comes a tale of a demonic haunting of a single person and not a place as we've become accustomed to ( Amityville etc ).

The movies spans about 20 days and takes us through the pure terror as encountered by this unsuspecting couple.

Where Blair Witch Project was outdoors, Paranormal Activity brings the evil into our homes and proves to be an excellent psychological device to scare the audience.

It seems that after "googling" Paranormal Activity, there are some people who truly believe, as they originally did with the Blair Witch Project, that the movie displayed real footage of real events! The sad news is that contrary to what many believe, the movie is just a movie but whether or not it's based on real events may be the topic of endless debates going forward.

The style in which it's filmed may make this movie a classic and
strike fear into viewers years after we've all forgotten about it.

MOVIE BUDGET
$11 000

MOVIE GROSSES
Total US Gross $107,918,810

International Gross $34,000,000
Worldwide Gross $141,918,810

THE VERDICT
Looking at the grosses for each movie, financially The Blair Witch Project may be the winner but bear in mind that Paranormal Activity only cost $11 000 to make.

As for storyline, I'll leave that for you to decide. Both movies have definitely made an impact on me that will last long after I've seen both. The mystery continues....

Now news comes of a sequel being considered to Paranemal Activity with a release date currently put as October 2010, let's hope it fares better than the uneventful and forgettable sequel to the Blair Witch Project, only time will tell.
