The other day I had the fortune of being one of the few to see the pilot for the upcoming CW TV show, The Flash! I watched it almost feverishly with excitement because the last time we had really seen this character as a live action hero was in the 90's, so obviously my enthusiasm was just a tad bit overwhelming.
Speaking of the 90's Flash, there is a lovely little nod to the original TV show in the form of John Wesley Shipp, playing our hero, Barry Allen's father which is definitely a nice touch. The pilot begins in a dramatic fashion showing a young Barry Allen being woken in the night by screaming and shouting as he and his father witness a strange lightning moving swiftly around his mother and his father uttering the words "run Barry, run!"
We are then shown Barry Allen 14 years later. His father is incarcerated for the murder of his mother and he, Barry, is working for the police department as a crime scene analyst. Allen / Grant Gustin comes across as a mix of Clark Kent and the latest Peter Parker ( The Amazing Spider-Man ), being young, ambitious and highly intelligent.
Allen is transformed after an explosion during a particle beam experiment courtesy of Star Labs goes awry and his is struck by this force and a combination of elements in his laboratory. Our hero then goes into a coma and is woken with new abilities and strength. With the help of Star Labs professors, he soon learns to control and harness his power.
Soon we learn that he is not the only person that was affected by the explosion and that there may be other meta-humans who were created throughout the city. Already one stands out, a bank robber who has the ability to control the weather. Very soon it becomes clear that Allen needs to become a costumed hero and save his city from this bank robbing villain before more people get hurt.
Thanks to some rogue Star Labs assistants he get his suit and mask and then saves the day as he stops the villain from an all out destructive rage and someone uttering the words "run Barry, run!" We then see him meeting up with another TV hero, the Green Arrow, from the TV show, Arrow, surprisingly giving Allen advice on what it would take to be a hero the people need.
I must admit I was impressed with the pilot and can't wait to see more episodes from the upcoming TV show. There's enough here to create all kinds of problems and enigmas for the Flash to solve and quite possibly enough fodder to have a city overrun with supervillains. By all indication, Professor Zoom may already be here!! Come on already CW, bring us more!
The show also stars Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, and TV veterans Jesse L. Martin and Tom Cavanagh.
