GI JOE has already spawned two huge box office movies and having added Dwayne Johnson to the cast, has become a force to be reckoned with. That said, Paramount Pictures have set a release date for the next instalment in the series to be released in 2016.
The announcement of writer Jonathan Lemkin shows their intent for yet another awesome sequel. Lemkins previous endeavours include 2007's Shooter, 2000's Red Planet and the story for Lethal Weapon 4 proving he has an understanding for the type of action needed for this kind of super action adventure and possible summer blockbuster.
Here's what Variety had to say:
"Most of the cast, including Dwayne Johnson and Adrianne Palicki, are expected to return with Lorenzo di Bonaventura producing. It was initially thought that Jon Chu would return to direct, but as of now he’s not attached to the pic.
Plot details are vague right now but sources say this installment is expected to revolve around Johnson’s character Roadblock, who was introduced in the last installment and soon became a fan favorite.
The idea is to get the film into production by the second quarter of 2015 so that it can make the 2016 release date."
My honest opinion on this is that I didn't quite enjoy the fact that Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Sienna Miller, Dennis Quaid and Marlon Wayans were so easily worked out of the storyline for the second movie. The addition of Bruce Willis did nothing to compensate for the loss of so many great characters and I kinda felt cheated with what was presented. Let's hope that GI JOE 3 will raise the standard to what was originally created with the first movie at least...
